Abstract:

The purpose of this initiative is to: (1) gather in one document service providers and civil society organizations sympathetic to migrants’ issues, including undocumented migrants. The organizations named and detailed here can be relied upon to assist migrants address issues relating to work experience and living conditions in the Okanagan. While the list below is not exhaustive, it does include organizations and services that workers can largely approach without fear or ridicule of their status, nor fear of reprisal, embarrassment or shame for their undocumentedness. (2) This document contains clear and accurate answers to key questions workers raised during interviews. Responses here are based on fact and policy instead of hearsay, rumour or word-of mouth “advice.” (3) Herein, in plain language and in Spanish, is the federal government’s most recent statement on the contemporary functioning of the immigration system, including qualifying criteria for entering the country through various programs, and the length of stay for those already in the country but without permanent residence status. It is important that workers are aware of the nuances of immigration policy in order to understand how it relates to them and impacts their experience and time in the country.
